Outpatient Support Groups
T du Toit Occupational Therapy is based at Tabula Rasa wellness centre in Broadacres. We offer a variety of Mental health support groups to tailor a variety of therapeutic needs. The groups often share a common ground, which in itself provides emotional support and cohesiveness. The goal of support groups is to empower patients with coping strategies, education and tools to assist in their rehabilitation process.
We focus on the following at present;
Wellness groups
Our wellness groups focus on the cohesiveness of being together with people who understand mental health battles and require a therapeutic environment to assist with life skills and every day coping strategies. Our aim is to explore and alter maladaptive interpersonal patterns of relating to others, improve mental well-being, overall function, social inclusion and to encourage healthy lifestyle. We focus on a variety of topics including relapse prevention, stress, conflict and anger management, goal setting, belief systems, self-awareness, self-esteem and more.
Substance groups
We assist people in understanding the impact that their previous substance use, as well as their rehabilitation process, has impacted their life. This is inclusive of their emotional state, family relationships, employment retention, productively and physical well-being. Our focus is re-skilling during recovery, with regards to social, coping and work skills. Ultimately the groups help to positively change behaviour going forward.
Functional Assessments
Through the process of a work/functional assessment using a battery of occupational therapy assessment tools and standardized tests. This process enables us to assist in determining the impact a patients mental health or diagnosis has had on their cognitive, psychosocial and physical function. This ultimately determines the effect their current deficits will have on their ability to carry out their activities of daily living and various roles within their family, home and work environments.
Return to work
Return to work focuses on skills to aid in improving cognitive skills such as memory, attention, problem solving and other higher order executive functioning.
A graded and a tailor made plan can be drawn up to assist the return to work process.
Beneficial elements of work (e.g. social contact, structure, meaningful daily activity) are incorporated in the return to work plan in order to facilitate recovery. Reasonable accommodations within the workplace can be recommended.
